Islay Trader ran aground

The general cargo ship Islay Trader ran aground off the coast of Margate in UK. The vessel, which is full of broken glass for recycling, was anchored off the British coast, but dragged anchor and stuck on the beach at Turner Centre Margate. The crew was unable to prevent grounding and reported the accident to the local authorities. At the scene was sent towing tug, which assisted with refloating the vessel during the high tide. The freighter Islay Trader was anchored off Margate Harbor again for inspection and safety survey, but later allowed to resume voyage to Antwerp after was estimated that there were no hull damages.

Fortunately during the accident there were no reported injuries and water pollution. The investigation for the root cause is under way.

A coastguard spokeswoman said the fuel tanks had not been damaged.

The general cargo ship Islay Trader (IMO: 9030474) has overall length of 74.90 m, moulded beam of 11.40 m and maximum draft of 4.50 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 2,386 DWT and the gross tonnage is 1,512 GRT. The ship was built in 1992 by RSW Rosslauer Schiffswerft in Germany.
